Breakfasts and lunches are served in the main dining room, the bistro or on the patio (depending on the weather).
We offer two dining choices in the evening–the bistro menu and a full dinner menu. The bistro offers a variety of big hamburgers, salads, appetizers, deli style sandwiches and our featured walleye chowder. Our main dinner entrees include seasonal choices, with a different menu each day. Special dietary needs can usually be met. If you are concerned, please give us a call and we can go over your preferences in more detail.
The main lodge and dining room are closed on Christmas Day, although the cabins are open.
While we are open year round, our dining services are closed for a few midweeks in the very late Fall and early Spring, to give our staff their vacations and to do our deep cleaning.
We know that pets are important members of the family, and that a vacation away from home can be a lot more fun and relaxing if your pet is not miles away staying in a kennel or with friends. Pets are very welcome at Gunflint. We request only a couple of common-sense courtesies, including keeping your dog on a leash when outside, and leaving them secured in a kennel if they are left in your cabin unattended, and notifying us of any damage to the cabin that may have been unintentionally caused by your pet. Our housekeeping staff will not come in if your dog is loose in the cabin.
There is a fee of $25 per night per pet, except during the Dog Lover’s Weekend, when dogs stay free
Planning to Visit Canada?
If you want to visit Canada at any point during your stay (canoe in the Quetico Provincial Park, picnic on the opposite shore of Gunflint Lake or fish on the Canadian side, for example) you will need a remote border crossing permit since you are not reporting to a port of entry. The easiest way to obtain the permit application is online: http://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-licence-non-residents-canada Follow the instructions on this web site, and be sure to allow 4-6 weeks for the application to be processed.
In addition you will need your passport in your possession if you enter Canada for your day of fishing.
Fishing & Licenses
Fishing plays an important role at Gunflint. Our clear, rocky lakes are the natural habitat for big walleye and native lake trout. The smallmouth bass fishing is some of the best in the midwest. Northern pike grow large in are cold, clear waters. And whitefish offers fast action for a short time each fall. The fishing season opens in mid May for walleye, lake trout and smallmouth bass. The northern pike season is open all year. Catch and release fishing is popular, but so are freshly caught shore lunches. Bring your fresh catch in and we will clean it and cook it up for you for appetizers in the dining room or pack it in ice for you to take home with you.
You can purchase both Minnesota and Canadian licenses on line for individuals and families. Your internet is faster at home and it is more convenient to buy it in advance, but we will be glad to do it here if you have forgotten. A trout stamp is also required of anglers possessing trout taken from any lake/stream or while fishing in a designated trout lake in Minnesota.
Canadian fishing licenses are available on line at: http://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-licence-non-residents-canada
You can purchase both your license and your outdoor card on line and print out your licenses immediately. This is easy to do before you leave home.
An 8% service charge is added to all accommodations and packages to cover the complimentary resort amenities such as canoe, kayaks, cross country skis and snowshoes, hiking trails and guided Naturalist activities. Mushers, guides, and wait staff always welcome direct expressions of appreciation. Please feel free to tip those who have done something special to make your activity, meal or stay more enjoyable.
In compliance with the Minnesota Clean Air Act, Gunflint Lodge & Outfitters is a no-smoking facility on all its premises, including the patio. Please smoke only in designated outdoor areas. Due to fire danger in our heavily wooded forest location, please dispose of all cigarettes and cigars only in designated cigarette disposal ashtrays.
Each Gunflint lakeside cabin has a fireplace (either gas or wood-burning) in the living room and is provided with wood, fire starter, and all the tools you will need for a personal fire in your cabin. These will be restocked daily throughout your stay. If you require assistance, please contact the front desk and someone will be able to help you. Canoer Cabins have a shared fire ring, and a shared fire ring is available near the lake by the beach. To start a fire in these fire rings, please contact any staff member to assist you. The fires will be extinguished by Gunflint staff when the Lodge closes in the evening. Due to the risk of forest fire in our heavily wooded forest location, fires in other locations are not permitted.
