The Call of the North: Minnesota’s State Bird, the Common Loon

There’s nothing quite like the haunting call of a loon echoing across the still waters of Gunflint Lake. For many visitors to Gunflint Lodge, and Minnesotans at large, the common loon (Gavia immer) is more than just a bird.

It’s a symbol of wild beauty, northern serenity, and deep-rooted connection to the lakes we cherish.

A True Icon of the Northwoods

Minnesota proudly adopted the common loon as its official state bird in 1961, and for good reason. With their striking black-and-white plumage, vivid red eyes, and graceful presence on the water, loons are instantly recognizable. They’re expert divers, capable of plunging more than 200 feet in search of fish, and they can hold their breath for up to a minute underwater.

Gunflint Lake and the surrounding Boundary Waters region provide a perfect summer haven for loons. Here, they nest along quiet shorelines, raise their young on the water, and fill the evening air with their eerie, enchanting calls.

The Music of the Wilderness

Loons are known for their four distinct vocalizations: the wail, tremolo, yodel, and hoot. Each call serves a different purpose, whether to maintain contact with a mate, warn off intruders, or signal distress. For guests staying in one of our lakefront cabins, falling asleep to the distant sound of a loon is an unforgettable part of the Gunflint experience.

Loon Watching at Gunflint Lodge

From early spring through late summer, Gunflint Lodge is a fantastic place to spot loons. They’re often seen gliding past our docks or bobbing in the shallows near the Lodge. Bring a pair of binoculars, grab a kayak, or join one of our guided lake tours for a chance to observe these majestic birds up close (but always respectfully, loons are sensitive to disturbance, especially during nesting season).

A Bird Worth Protecting

Loons are sensitive indicators of lake health. Their presence signals clean water and thriving aquatic ecosystems. Unfortunately, they face threats from pollution, shoreline development, lead fishing tackle, and climate change. At Gunflint Lodge, we encourage all visitors to practice responsible recreation, pack out trash, use non-lead tackle, and give wildlife the space they need.

Carrying the Northwoods Home

For many guests, the call of the loon lingers long after their trip ends. Whether it’s a loon call ringtone, a carved wooden loon souvenir, or simply a quiet moment of reflection, these birds leave a lasting impression. We like to think of them as guardians of the lake, reminding us to slow down, breathe deep, and tune in to the rhythms of the natural world.
