Fall Colors

Experience the Vibrant Fall Colors of the Boundary Waters

September 5-October 20, 2022 (Sundays through Thursdays)

A ruffed grouse sits on a branch frame by golden fall leaves.Gunflint Lodge offers an array of places from which to enjoy the breathtaking colors of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as summer transitions into fall. The aspen and birch pop with golden hues against the White Pine and spruce to create spectacular views. Then in mid-October, the tamarack turns bright yellow before shedding its needles for the winter. Hiking and driving are both terrific ways to enjoy the color shows. Give yourself plenty of time to drive along the legendary Highway 61 paralleling Lake Superior while keeping your eyes peeled for white tail deer, bald eagles, and even timber wolves. Stop along the way at Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Once you turn onto the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway, you will have multiple opportunities to spot wildlife such as moose, fox, or Canadian Lynx and pull over to take photos along the way. For those looking for an opportunity to hike, Caribou Rock and Honeymoon Bluff offer magnificent vistas. Right here at Gunflint Lodge, a hike to the top of the High Cliffs or Lookout Point offers a great view from which to see the foliage transition along the shore of Gunflint Lake and across the Canadian border. The Fall Colors vacation package includes three nights of accommodations in a lakeside cabin complete with a fireplace, guided Naturalist activities such as Fall colors or Fall Foraging Hikes, and unlimited use of the canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and hiking trails. If you’re looking for adventure, add a two-hour zip through the forest on the Towering Pines Canopy Tour zip line, take out an e-fat bike, or rent a fishing boat or pontoon to take in the fall colors from the lake. A horseback trail ride or hayride will let you enjoy the fall colors from atop a gentle saddle horse or pulled behind our Clydesdales.
