Early Christmas Holiday Package with Winter Solstice Dinner

Kick off your Christmas Holiday celebrations at Gunflint Lodge and enjoy a special Winter Solstice dinner and night hike. Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year, and when we start looking forward to longer days and shorter nights ahead. The Winter Solstice has been celebrated throughout time as the return of daylight and has played an important role in cultures worldwide from ancient times until today. In fact, many of the customs, symbols, and rituals associated with Christmas, such as Christmas lights and a lighted tree, are actually associated with ancient winter solstice celebrations. In ancient Scandinavia, a Yule—or Juul—log was brought in and burned on the hearth in honor of Thor, who’s job it was to bring the sun’s warmth back to the Earth.

This is the perfect time to gather your family or friends together for an early holiday celebration at Gunflint Lodge & Outfitters. Here we celebrate these traditions on the longest night of the year, both to enjoy our magical night skies—some of the darkest in the world on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness—the world’s largest designated International Dark Skies Sanctuary—and to begin preparing for the summer ahead, when canoers and hikers and fisherman will again return to the Northwoods. On December 21 we will celebrate the Solstice with a special dinner presentation, traditional dinner with a special menu in front of the fireplace, and guided Celestial Legends night hike. Your three-night stay will offer plenty of opportunity to enjoy the sunset over Gunflint Lake, watch the sunrise over the High Cliffs, photograph nocturnal animals, and even do some exploring during the day as well!
