Your First Step into the BWCA Starts Here!
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) spans over a million acres of pristine glacial lakes and forests. For many, the vastness is intimidating.
Boundary Waters 101 is a premier Boundary Waters program designed by Gunflint Lodge’s expert outfitters. This immersive experience bridges the gap between “resort guest” and “wilderness explorer.” You will learn the technical skills of a woodsman in the safety and comfort of our historic Northwoods resort, ensuring that your first solo or family outfitting trip is successful, safe, and unforgettable.
By the end of your stay, you’ll be prepared to plan and begin your own Boundary Waters canoe trip.
Why Choose Gunflint Lodge?

Ready for the Wild
The goal of Boundary Waters 101 is to empower you to explore on your own terms. On Friday, our “graduates” are encouraged to transition directly into a self-guided outfitting package.
Plan Your Follow-Up Trip: Our Outfitting Department will help you apply your new skills immediately. We provide ultra-light Kevlar canoes, specialized wilderness food menus, and top-tier camping gear.
