Books in the Woods

books in the northwoods

Here’s a great way to add a new dimension to your book discussion group. We select a
list of books (mostly fiction, and a couple of good mysteries) that feature Northwoods and
Minnesota authors and illustrators. Afternoon presentations (in various formats – these
can be readings, presentations, or panels) feature the authors who will be joining us for the
weekend. We co-sponsor this special weekend with our friends Joci Tilsen, Jim Bour, and Lisa Wagner.
Joci and Jim are the past owners of the Valley Bookseller in Stillwater, Minnesota. Lisa is a long time literary friend and initially introduced Joci and Jim to Gunflint.

Featuring —

Julie Kramer and Mary Sharratt

Julie Kramer is the author of Stalking Susan and Missing Mark. Her husband, Joe Kimball, will be joining her at BITW, and his book, Secrets of the Congdon Mansion will also be featured.

Mary Sharratt is the author of The Vanishing Point, Bitch Lit, The Real Minerva, Summit Avenue, and in April of 2010, her new book Daughters of the Witching Hill will be released.

The reading list is as follows:

Julie Kramer's books: Stalking Susan, and Missing Mark

Julie’s choice: Heaven’s Keep by William Kent Krueger

Joe Kimball's book: Secrets of the Congdon Mansion

Mary Sharratt’s books: Vanishing Point, and The Real Minerva

Mary’s choice: Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich

Joci's choice: From Doon with Death by Ruth Rendell

Jim's choice: Independence Day by Richard Ford

Lisa's choice: Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya

Lisa's Pick: "Bless Me, Ultima" by Rudolfo Anaya
(Note: I formerly chose a Tim O'Brien book, which would make for a fascinating discussion; however, as I re-read evaluations from last year, people seemed to want books that were "less dark." While the O'Brien book is amazing, it is both dark and disturbing. Forgive me for the last-minute change. I will be happy to discuss "In the Lake of the Woods," however, with anyone who chooses to read it.)
